| Photography is its own kind of perceptual experience: one that seems to follow along closely with our visual perception of the world, but that somehow never quite runs in sync with exactly what our eyes see. Photographs transform the world in front of the lens into something that closely matches, but always remain seperate from that world. Intersting photographs offer the viewer images of th world that sit in the mind and foster the imagiation. What I try to do with my photographs is to create images that highlight how spaces feel, how spaces are perceived, not just by the eye, but by the entire body. While realism is important I find it more interesting to explore the plasticity of photographic realism in an effort to create a visual impression of the space, rather than merely a visual record. For Architects and Clients: Only a few people actually expereince your Architecture / Design in person: for everyone else, the primary way to understand, appreciate, and admire your project is to look at photographs. Images are the perception of your work by the public, by the critics and by your potential clients, which, therefore, makes them a critical part of your practice. Steve King Photography will work, in close cooperation with you, to create images that convincingly express your design vision to the outside world. I begin each project by discussing the design concepts and priorities of the architect, looking at renderings, and visiting the site to scout the location, and evaluate lighting conditions. This process serves as the basic framework around which we will construct our images. The photographs always transform the architecture, and our goal is to create photographs that, singularly and serially, capture, both, the visuality of the place, and the corporal perceptions of how the space is experienced by the people who live their lives there. |
